RHINO-STOP® Sky-Edge Guardrail
RHINO-STOP® Sky-Edge system, developed and manufactured by Safe Direction. Its innovative design positions the barrier flush with the outer edge of the parking deck, aligning the w-beam guardrail directly with the slab edge to eliminate encroachment into designated parking bays. This zero-footprint layout makes it the ideal choice for tight-space upgrades where conventional barrier systems are impractical.
Favoured by engineers and asset managers for retrofitting existing car parks with limited floor space, RHINO-STOP® Sky-Edge offers a streamlined solution that meets both safety and design challenges. The system features patented energy-absorbing baseplates, which reduce the load transferred to anchor bolts by dissipating impact energy—protecting both infrastructure and vehicle occupants.
Additional Information
Designed for pedestrian safety as well as vehicle containment, the Sky-Edge system can be configured with optional handrails, sight rails, and mesh infill panels along elevated car park perimeters. Its fully modular design uses off-the-shelf components for fast installation and easy on-site customisation to suit specific project layouts.
Key Features:
Certified to the 30kN (Type F) impact load under AS/NZS 1170.1, Clause 3.8
Zero-intrusion design keeps guardrail aligned with slab edge
Standard post spacing: 2.0m centres
Optional system height: 1100mm (with handrail) or 1300mm (with sight rail)
Pedestrian safety options: Mesh infill panels available
Anchor points: 1 bolt per post for simplified installation
Crash Test Performance:
Installed on the perimeter of a 150mm thick suspended concrete slab
Impact tested using a 1500kg passenger vehicle at 15km/h, hitting the system at 90 degrees, 0.5 metres above ground level

RHINO-STOP® Sky-Edge Guardrail FAQs
How does RhinoStop® work?
Every RHINO-STOP® barrier is equipped with a patented, energy-dissipating base plate designed to reduce peak forces on post anchors. This innovative yielding mechanism absorbs the energy from vehicle impacts, helping to safeguard the surrounding concrete substrate from structural damage.
What Standards were referenced to evaluate RhinoStop®?
RHINO-STOP® has undergone certified crash testing to confirm its compliance with the 30kN vehicle impact load requirement (Type F), as outlined in AS/NZS 1170.1, Clause 3.8.
What crash tests were performed with RhinoStop®?
Crash testing for the RHINO-STOP® system was carried out with the barrier installed at the edge of a 150mm thick suspended concrete slab, simulating a realistic high-risk scenario. During the test, a 1500kg passenger vehicle travelling at 15km/h collided with a single w-beam guardrail panel, supported by three RHINO-Posts®, with the impact point located 0.5 metres above ground level.
What are the benefits of Safe Direction’s crash test evaluation?
Safe Direction’s crash testing approach for RHINO-STOP® Elite is engineered to replicate the most extreme and critical impact scenarios. Testing is conducted with posts installed directly on the edge of a 150mm thick suspended concrete slab, closely assessing the risk of edge failure and confirming the adequacy of anchor embedment. Vehicle impacts are carried out at speeds up to double those specified in AS/NZS 1170.1, using short-length barrier configurations that concentrate the impact load on fewer posts, producing maximum system deflection and providing a true test of structural performance.
What is the minimum number of posts required for a RhinoStop® installation?
Each RHINO-STOP® installation requires a minimum of three (3) RHINO-Posts® to ensure structural integrity and proper load distribution during impact events.
What is the spacing between posts?
RHINO-Posts® must be spaced at intervals no greater than 2 metres to maintain system strength and compliance with safety standards.
How is RhinoStop® manufactured?
RHINO-STOP® is constructed entirely from steel, incorporating hot dip galvanised RHINO-Posts® and w-beam guardrails for maximum durability and long-term corrosion resistance.
